Some things I thought I would share.

Today I got nostalgic, and started going through some stuff. After digging through my external for awhile I decided to get some things on here I hadn't really posted, or posted anywhere. Mostly experimental or just years past projects. But all projects I liked. I'll do a woman one of these days... that isn't dead and naked. You just wait.

This was a series of three character speedpaints with the theme japanese ghost. I was watching that show on sci-fi Ghost Hunters International when I did them. There was like a marathon or something. But I have a ton of work in progresses of these guys as I talked to people on aim I took screencaps. Let me know if you want me to post them if you are curious. They all started in black and white, and then were glazed with colors and hit with blending layers. For once I didn't smatter textures all over them.

This one was for an Ad and Graph project from sophomore year. It was the navigation project where we redid all Columbus Metro Library, so it was color coded and way easier to navigate. This was a poster to promote our children's readings. Something simple. At the time I was obsessed with the polygonal lasso tool. I still break this out when I really need to be quick. This was all done in one sitting on a saturday. It crashed enough times that the dragon is just a screenshot, with some minimal touch-ups, and the reason why it is just a tiny bit less refined. It drives me crazy now just how desaturated the kid is. But it is one of my favorites that I've done at CCAD.

The Assassin was done for the sophomore computer class. I believe it was the last adobe illustrator project we had. I've always had a soft spot for it, if not just for the small amount of illustrator work I do. I do love the function of vectors, but I still think adobe illustrator is one of the clunkiest vector programs I used. Why they haven't merged flash's drawing capabilities with illustrators shaping and pen tool features into one program, is beyond me.

Yet another sophomore project. This time from Design for Illustration. I still think the Rat painting was my best thing in there and the most fun, but again, I don't get to use illustrator much. With alittle more time and some actual painting, without having to worry about color changing, I think this one could have really been alot better. But it was another one of those one-sitting, night-before projects. I'm surprised I'm still not procrastinating sophomore year.

This was a sketch-a-day that never got posted. I can't remember why. But I think it was the one that put me a day behind, that eventually snowballed and made it incapable for me to catch up.

Well, I completely forgot about this. This is my failed Society of Illustrators piece from last year. I remember getting really bored with it, and just being burnt out enough on homework to just crank out a really, really crappy speedpaint that I was ashamed to even print. I had higher aspirations for this, but in the end just stuck sketches together from a sketchbook, and killed my original idea. I still want to do the scene but make it more interesting.

It was based on a three-part fable I dreamed up freshman year that I kept doing concept art for, back when I really loved concept art.

Sketch-a-day 026 027 028

Today, I have three. For today, yesterday, and the day before that. Although chances are I'll update tommorrow with comps for a spot illustration assignment. The only new one here is The dude with the mustache which refused to be photographed or scanned. Oh blue pencil... you little jerk. Still anxious to get some stories up with their own mini illustrations. But today the theme seems to be blue.

Cats. They are magical giant flying creatures that delight children.

Mermen refuse to wear clothes. They act like animals.

When it comes to strong men, they are nothing without their stache.

Sketch-a-day 025

Dear Dave,

Here is your request, as my interpretation. I hope you enjoy it.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Puncekar

Expect some short stories I've written in fiction class to accompany the next few. Also expect another one to be posted today due in lack of posting one yesterday. Gotta get back on track with these.

Sketch-a-day 024

Just a really, realy quick one today I did during a film and lit lecture on our reading assignment. Just one of those where it was just smooth from beginning to end with no real screw-ups. Just scanned the packet, as I liked how just stuck on it was. May post another one today, since this one was so quick and I have some time to do one, now that the hell week has ended.

Just been so inspired lately due to all you dudes and dudettes. Specifically watching Eric Fortune and Joe Kovach painting in the illustration lab here at school. Makes me want to buckle down and try a really rendered piece, of which it's not something I've really tried before. Of course, I say that... then post this.

Sketch-a-day 023

So. Here is my Styles and Concepts class assignment. Did I miss the mark on the likeness? Entirely. But I try not to see these things as failures. This is just an experiment. Yeah. An experiment. Pretty much a speedpaint that was taken a bit further than usual. Started it from scratch at 8 pm. It is now 4 am. I'd say 6 hours or less in total.

Now that it's done... I'm thinking I'm gonna put on an episode of hell's kitchen on hulu and fall asleep. Wish I had some Andy Griffith Show instead though.

Oh, and if you are wondering who this is supposed to be, well. If someone can guess it, that I haven't told, I'll do a sketch-a-day specially for you. But bless your mind if you can actually get it.

Sketch-a-day 022

Three quick comps for black and white tomorrow. Assignment was to do a dvd cover, so i chose one of my favorite movies. I think it works out and sets the tone well enough. Worked harder pumping out thumbs than these though. I want to do the center one. By far my favorite. I doubt I can get away with the last one and receive a good grade even though it's my second pick.

Have two marker sketches I did today specifically for the sketch-a-day, but no time to dig my scanner out. Have to prep for a writing fiction workshop in 4 hours. It's crazy just how badly I manage my time. Thank goodness I'm a night owl. Here I come microsoft word.

And tomorrow barreling through a full illustration I've been putting off for a few weeks. If you see this Mahan, this Celebrity/Animal assignment... I hate it with passion.

Sketch-a-day 021

Today's sketch isn't much of a sketch, its my comic-book homework due tomorrow. This one, once it got moving was a ton of fun. Forgot how much I love drawing monsters, and moreso tails of monsters. Characters are based loosely off of the character concepts given in class, along with a script. It'll be interesting to see how all the pages read together. Every student in the class was assigned a page. Good first assignment for the semester. Interesting, but easy. Got all the basics with it. Next up is a cover contest for it. Excited for that.

P.s. don't make fun of the last panel. I know it's weak.

Sketch-a-day 020

Hard to believe this is only no. 20. This isn't the one I wanted to post up and work on today, but this is what I have. One of these days I'll play catch up, with just some plain old sketches. They're all here. Till then: Ugly Floating Plant Baby. Time to start cranking away at my comicbook page.

Sketch-a-day 019

Yiss Mur-ray.

Season 2 has been so good thus far. I recommend it whole heartedly, because it is up there with the claw game ep of arrested development and the Sandwich day ep of 30 rock. Anyway, I really needed to work on my portraits in general, even if these are exaggerated. I have enough sketches done to cover me till wednesday, but tomorrow I have a semi important one I haven't had the time to sit down and draw properly. Pretty excited.

Sketch-a-day 018

Another two twins, dastardly dangerous, monstrous and murderous.

Felt pretty good to do another one of these after so long. The original pencil was all done in blue. Still not sure if I just don't like the original more. Got the newspaper texture off of a random search awhile back off of a deviantart. Can't remember for the life of me where from. Another remnant of figure drawing class.

Twain was a Gambling Man.

Mark Twain wrote the story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County back in the mid 1800's during the Gold Rush. So leave it to Mr. Brain Kane to bring it back to current day and assign it as a Black and White assignment. It's a great story about the legendary Gambler Jim Smiley, pictured so humbly throwing around cash everywhere here, and his addiction. It's kind of a odd comedic short story. Don't know if I'd recommend it, but it sure was interesting. Before you say, "Hey wait, I see grey in that black and white illustration..." let me just say, I had to get a screen-tone in there. I love em.

Oh, and it's a two page spread, meant to be folded right down the middle.

Well, I only got to post this because I've yet to sleep today, and if I go to sleep now, I won't wake up for anything. Wish me luck tomorrow, cause I'm gonna be one fatigued jerk. If you see me, I will be grumpy, and most likely in a state of constant rage and anguish.

Sketch-a-Day 017 kinda

So instead of a sketch today I gave oondu a much needed facelift. So just as a reminder:

Oondu is a collective of CCAD illustration majors, all gathered around on this blog. It's all people I know and respect, and thus far is mostly just friends. I run the thing right now, make sure the theme gets switched out every long once in awhile,  and that everyone stays happy. Started out exclusive with just like 5 or so people, but I couldn't draw the line, and I still can't. Gonna send out some more soon. It's about time I did it, hasn't been touched since before Christmas break. Place was looking stale.

Can you tell who learned how to make 3d text today? THIS GUY.

Soon I'd like to finish up this blog. Get a more official logo rocking at the top, and fix some browser related issues with colors. Not enough time in the day.

Sketch-a-day 016

So recently I found a moleskine I bought then quickly abandoned during freshman year. So after cutting out the few first pages of rubbish, it's good as new. Doesn't seem as jinxed. I made a bad first drawin in it freshman year and everythign after that... just bothered me. But these pages take acrylic like a champ! Both of these were super quick. Really fun to do. Next ones will be from reference, as these are pretty wonky.

Will be posting a figure drawing class project up once it's further along. A riot scene taking place on hundreds of stacked TVs. I don't think I could screw that up even if I tried.

Sketch-a-day 014 015

Just a update so people know I'm here. I have a sketch assigned to all the days I've missed, just no tim recently to get them uploaded. I should be working on Styles and Concepts work instead of posting this for instance. Anyway, two sketches from figure drawing today. Drew em out of my head. First time painting with watered down graphite dust, then reworking it over top with my normal .05 mechanical pencil. I would like to do more of these. They go extremely quickly compared to the results.

So keep tuned in. I'll get all of those missing ones up eventually. This weekend most likely.
